Abstract
Language is a tool owned by human to communicate and talk about something in their mind or their ideas even their feeling to be understood by each other arbitrarily. There is the science which studies about language, it is called as linguistics. There are five sub-fields of linguistics; phonetics, phology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The sub-field of linguistics in this research is syntax, the focus will be on two modifications of noun phrase; pre-modification, and post-modification. Therefore the purpose of the research is to analyze the sentences in the novel of Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling as pre-modification and post-modification of noun phrases and the tree diagrams of the pre-modification and post-modification having noun phrases filled the functions such as subject, predicate, subject complement, object complement, etc which will be considered as verb group phrase. The writer uses pre-modification and post-modification of noun phrases theory by Linda Thomas and Irman Nurhapitudin as the main references. The source of data which is used to analyze the pre-modification and post-modification of noun phrases is the novel entitled "Harry Potter" by J.K. Rowling. The writer takes seven chapters out of 17 chapters to be the object of research. The data which is used is qualitative data and uses documentary study technique in taking the sample of them. The writer found 34 sentences which are analyzed as pre-modification having noun phrases, and 30 sentences which are analyzed as post-modification having noun phrases in the novel of Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling especially in the seven chapters. From the 34 sentences which are analyzed as pre-modification having noun phrases filled by verb group phrase of mono-transitive are 20 sentences, intensive 9 sentences, intransitive 4 sentences, complex 1 sentence, and di-transitive 2 sentences as its function. From 30 sentences which are analyzed as post-modification having noun phrases filled by verb group phrase of mono-transitive are 15 sentences, intensive 10 sentences, intransitive 3 sentences, and complex 1 sentence as its function.
