Abstract

Vocabulary level test (VLT) is a means of determining the extent to which test takers could recognize the form-meaning connections of words in five frequency level (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 words). A learner can know how many words they have mastered, and it could impact to their language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Moreover, the learner cannot write a text as what they have in their mind, due to their lack of vocabulary. The design of this research was correlation quantitative method. The population was limited to students at VIII grade in SMP Al-Hasan, Panyileukan, Bandung. Vocabulary level test (VLT) score and writing descriptive text score as instruments given to the 24 students. The results of those scores were analyzed to find out the correlation by using Pearson’s correlation calculation in SPSS 26. The result of the research shows that students’ vocabulary level test (VLT) average score was 1357.45 means mid-frequency level. As for the descriptive text mean or average score, is 75.92 means fair category. The students' vocabulary level test (VLT) and their writing descriptive text were indicated high correlation with correlation value, “rcount”=0.617, in the scale of 0.61-0.80 and the score of “rcount” is higher than “r table” with degree of significant α=5% (0.404) and 1% (0.514) with n=24, it indicates that the score of correlation coefficient is significant. In other words, the students’ vocabulary level test (VLT) and their writing descriptive text is significantly correlated each other.
