Abstract

This research explains the appraisal devices recognized in Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono’s speech (in this research then called as AHY). It identified how AHY expresses his feelings, attitudes, and judgment on Indonesian Geopolitical by applying Martin and White Theory (2005). This research was done by breaking down the speech into clauses and managable chunks to find out the Attitude devices in the speech. The findings showed that there were 41 system of attitudes which consist of 13 positive affects, 2 negative affects, 11 positive judgements, 2 negative judgements, 13 appreciations. AHY gave priority to a positive assessment in his speech because he believed that Indonesia's geopolitics in the 21st century had significantly improved with the increasing capacity of the Indonesian military, making Indonesia more connected and more integrated and more exposed to the global environment by increasing opportunities for maximum resilience. and he also gave a negative assessment of enemy attacks that could endanger divisions in the sovereignty of the Indonesian state. This study confirms that AHY is a good orator with a high ability in public speaking. he gives his attitude by stating facts and personal experiences.
