Abstract
Implicature is a study that providing explicit explanations or describes that have indirect or implied meaning therein. The implicature always invites us to find out the meanings that cannot be uttered by the speaker. Besides, Implicature will make the hearer infer what the speakers said. One of the examples that implicature often used is when Donald Trump delivered his statements during the speech. The purposes of the research are to find out and analyze: (1) What types of implicature are found in Donald Trump’s speech of the Iranian attaks, and (2) How figurative language supports the appearances of the implicature in Donald Trump’s speech of the Iranian attack. This research uses Grice’s theory. The source of data taken from transcripts of Donald Trump’s speech about Iranian attacks from 2018 until early 2020. The research method used in this research is a qualitative. In the process of collecting the data, the researcher focus on the potential utterances that can be categorized into implicature utterances by watching the videos and reading the transcript from the speech of Donald Trump about the Iranian attacks. As the results, there are 30 data found in Donald Trump’s speech. All of the data are formed by two types of implicature, there are 16 conversational implicature and 14 conventional implicature. Meanwhile, there are four types of figurative language that supports the appearances of the implicature utterances. There are 5 comparative, 21 contradiction, 8 correlative, and 3 repetition. The dominant type of implicature used in Donald Trump’s speech about Iranian attacks is conversational implicature. In this case, the most common type of conversational implicature used is particularized conversational implicature. Besides, the most types of figurative language used in delivering utterances of implicature is figurative language of contradiction, which shows the opposing speech.
