Abstract

Self-esteem is a personal judgment of dignity reflected in the individual's attitudes toward himself. Self-esteem referred to the entity that reflects an attitude of acceptance, rejection, and shows the degree to which a person feels that they are competent, relevant, efficient, and worthy of approval. Self-esteem is important in speaking skill. It is an effective factor in students’ speaking skill. Speaking is the language interaction element used to facilitate social interaction, promote emotional intelligence, and serve a significant role in conveying ideas or opinions to others. In learning speaking, self-esteem is one of the personal traits which is a factor that influences speaking skill. It can make students succeed or fail in mastering good English speaking skills. Therefore, this study is intended to find the correlation between students’ self-esteem toward their speaking skills. This study is aimed: (1) to find how students’ self-esteem of seventh-grade students in MTs Al-Mishbah Bandung in English speaking class, (2) to find how students' speaking skills of seventh-grade students in MTs Al-Mishbah Bandung, (3) to know how significant correlation between students’ self-esteem is toward their speaking skills of seventh-grade students in MTs Al-Mishbah. This research used a quantitative research approach, particularly correlation design, using Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) to find students' self-esteem and performance test of recorded monologue for speaking ability. The participants of this research were 30 students of seventh grade in MTs Al-Mishbah Bandung, which was selected by purposive sampling. The data was obtained from questionnaires and test. The data analysis was presented by using Person product-moment formula manually and using SPSS 26. The result of this study showed that the correlation between students’ self-esteem and their speaking skills is moderate, got from the correlation coefficient score result is 0.498. Based on the test hypothesis, the significant (2-tailed) is 0.005 or less than equal to 0.005. So, the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected automatically. In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between students’ self-esteem to their speaking skills of 30 students of the seventh-grade of MTs Al-Mishbah Bandung. It is suggested for teachers to pay attention to students’ self-esteem in teaching speaking skill. Students also must be confident in learning English in the class. Moreover, carrying out the same research yet in different skill is suggested for future research.
