Abstract

In this thesis researcher focus on discussing the fantasy genre formula in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. This research uses genre theory as the main theory. The researcher focused this research on fantasy elements of fantasy genre from some experts like Saricks, Gates, Howard, and some other experts. Fantasy genre is one of genre in popular literature. And also this research uses Cawelti’s theory of formulas. To find the truth, the researcher has two research question: (1) What are the fantasy genre’s formula represented in Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy?; (2) How are setting and mythical creatures build fantasy formula in Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy?. The research method that the researcher uses in this study is a literary criticism descriptive method with a qualitative approach to analyze the data. Data is taken from The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001-2003) by Peter Jackson as primary data and movie scripts as secondary data. The result of this study are showing that fantasy movies in general will have the same formula, As theory of some experts, accordingly the researcher concludes that the fantasy elements contained in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy those are: (1) An ignorant beginning, (2) Imaginary world, (3) Imaginary being, (4) The journey/quest, (5) Treasure, (6) Action motives, (7) A clear sense of good and evil, (8) The use of magic and supernatural power. These fantasy elements are found in The Lord of The Rings film trilogy. The formula itself is needed to satisfy the audience, because the purpose of popular literature is to satisfy the reader or the audience.
