Abstract
This research is aimed: (1) to find out the students’ vocabulary mastery in learning vocabulary through digital “Slice of Life” story webtoon, and (2) to find out the students’ responses in learning vocabulary digital “Slice of Life” story webtoon. Vocabulary development must be considered because it affects students’ language development. As stated by Harmon, Wood, & Keser, (2009) as well as Linse (2005) that learners' vocabulary development is an important aspect of their language development. This research uses case study with purposeful sampling. By using this method, the researcher focuses on investigating the students’ responses of using digital “Slice of Life” story webtoon as a media learning English webtoon. The participants of this research were nine students of eight-grade. The data were obtained from the document analysis, questionnaire and interview. The data analysis was presented by describing the result of the students’ vocabulary mastery and the students’ responses digital “Slice of Life” story webtoon in learning English vocabulary. The result of using digital “Slice of Life” story webtoon in learning English vocabulary showed: (1) The use of the digital "Slice of Life" story webtoon in vocabulary learning is quite influential on students' vocabulary mastery. The students can understand the meaning of a word contained in a webtoon story. Besides, they can make a sentence from the words contained in the webtoon story even though there are several mistakes such as errors in spelling, grammar and pronouns. (2) The digital "Slice of Life" webtoon in learning vocabulary has both positive and negative responses. The positive responses of the students said that using the digital "Slice of Life" webtoon story makes learning fun because pictures are making the story more interesting. The negative response of some students said that the use of the digital "Slice of Life" story webtoon has problems such as limited space for mobile phones to install the application, limited internet quota, and unstable internet signal. In conclusion, this research shows that the use of digital "Slice of Life" story webtoon as media in learning English vocabulary has quite influential on students' vocabulary mastery. In addition, students' responses to the use of the digital "Slice of Life" story webtoon have a positive and negative responses. There are several things that must be considered before applying the digital "Slice of Life" story webtoon in learning activities. The teacher must ensure that the smart phone used by students can download the webtoon application. On the other hand, teachers must ensure that students have internet quotas with stable connections
