Abstract
ENGLISH : Lexical ambiguity is a kind of ambiguity caused by the ambiguity of word. The appearance of lexical ambiguity occurs when a word has more than one meaning, and lexical ambiguity depends on homonymy and polysemy. The research is interested in analyzing kinds of lexical ambiguity found in the article of The New York Times online newspaper and their interpretation of the ambiguity. The research uses descriptive-qualitative methods. Meanwhile, the data are taken from the articles online newspaper about SARS-CoV-2, which focuses on ambiguous words. Therefore, the writer is conducting research on this topic first by discussing the types of ambiguity, which contained in the topic article SARS-CoV-2 in The New York Times online newspaper. Furthermore, for the second research is explaining the interpretations of lexical ambiguity in the topic of the article, which the meaning of each datum is interpreted based on the context of the sentence in the article. The research using Semantics’ theory by Stephen Ullman (1977). Based on data analysis, there are two types of lexical ambiguity were found on the topic of the SARS-CoV-2 article, namely polysemy (12 data) and homonymy (19 data). From these findings, it can be concluded that ambiguity can occur in any kind of situations such as in daily conversation, or in written sources, because one word that is ambiguous can lead to misunderstanding of each other. INDONESIA : Ambiguitas leksikal adalah sejenis ambiguitas yang disebabkan oleh ambiguitas kata. Munculnya ambiguitas leksikal terjadi ketika sebuah kata memiliki lebih dari satu makna, dan ambiguitas leksikal bergantung pada homonimi dan polisemi. Peniliti tertarik dengan menganalisis jenis ambiguitas leksikal yang ditemukan dalam artikel surat kabar online The New York Times dan interpretasinya terhadap ambiguitas tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif-kualitatif. Sedangkan data diambil dari artikel surat kabar online tentang SARS-CoV-2 yang fokus pada kata-kata ambigu. Oleh karena itu penulis melakukan penelitian tentang topik ini yang pertama dengan membahas jenis-jenis ambiguitas yang terdapat pada artikel topik SARS-CoV-2 di surat kabar online The New York Times. Selanjutnya untuk penelitian kedua menjelaskan interpretasi ambiguitas leksikal dalam topik artikel tersebut, yang mana makna setiap datum diinterpretasikan berdasarkan konteks kalimat dalam artikel. Penulis menggunakan teori Semantik menurut Stephen Ullman (1977). Berdasarkan analisis data ditemukan dua jenis ambiguitas leksikal yang ditemukan pada topik artikel SARS-CoV-2, yaitu polisemi (12 data) dan homonimi (19 data). Dari temuan tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa ambiguitas dapat terjadi dalam berbagai situasi seperti dalam percakapan sehari-hari, atau dalam sumber tertulis, karena satu kata yang ambigu dapat menimbulkan kesalahpahaman satu sama lain.
