Abstract

In a literary work, there is a lesson on comparative literature. It teaches about two literary works, such as novels and films. Novels are the most desirable literary works of many circles. Many of today's film directors have presented a spectacle of a novel adaptation. The rise to adapt a novel to film aims to attract everyone to watch the film and get a high rating. Therefore, it is necessary to know how the adaptation theory is used and work to transform the text structure of the manuscript into a visual structure of the film. From several adaptation models expressed by experts, it is possible that adaptation to the literary work (novel) into a film can be made in two ways: first, prioritize the fidelity of the source adaptation; and second, contextuality and intertextuality of the source. Also, the adaptation of a film is often seen in the cast dialogue in the film. The study aims to address the comparison of Wuthering Heights novels with the film's adaptation of the novel itself. The study focuses on two things: (1) Alteration in the main cast of the novels and movies, which are associated with the theory of dialogue adaptation, and (2). The similarities and differences from the two adaptation films Wuthering Heights by William Wyler (1936) and Wuthering Heights by Andrea Arnold (2011). This research was conducted using the comparative method. The data is a dialogue that has been selected by researchers. The theory used was the adaptation theory by Linda Hutcheon and a dialogue adaptation by Robert Stam. Results of this study: Firstly, there are 3 categories of changes that appear in the dialogue in the novel, and the film is: (1) Transform (8 data), (2) modifier (14 data), (3) elaborated (1 data). Secondly, the difference in two films adaptation with different years shows a very significant difference in terms of one adaptation.
