Abstract

A speech act is an utterance defined in terms of a speaker’s intention and the effect it has on a listener. Speech act also is an utterance that serves a function in communication. There are various speech acts used by people as social beings. One of the kinds of speech acts is a command. A command can be delivered directly or indirectly. This study analyzes the process of using the directive speech acts type command used by the judges in America’s Got Talent 2019, using the speech acts theory by George Yule. Furthermore, this study also focuses on the speech acts performed by the participant in America’s Got Talent toward the judge’s command. The research method that used in this research is the qualitative method. In the process of collecting data, the researcher focus on the judge's command of the participant and listened to the participant’s utterance toward the judge’s command using the general pattern of preference structure by George Yule. The researcher also interprets the judge’s utterance along with the participant in America’s Got Talent through Got Talent Global’s YouTube channel from audition week 1 until audition week 16. In conclusion, there are 92 judge’s command and preference structure pattern that uttered by the judges and the participant in America’s Got Talent 2019. All of the commands are formed into two types, they are direct command, and indirect command. Meanwhile, the general pattern of preference structure is formed into two types, they are acceptance or preferred, and refusal or dispreferred.
