Abstract

Sarcasm is a figure of speech aimed at hurting someone’s feelings or something. Sarcasm is often used as form of humilination that expresses hatred and anger using harst words. One of them is in the case of intimidation. Therefore, the researcher is interested to analyzing the responses of sarcasm used in “The Walking Dead” television series because in this series there are so many usages of figure of speech. One of them is sarcasm. This study analyzes the response to the sarcasm expression used in “The Walking Dead” television series the 7th and 8th seasons based on the introduction of the story at the final season 6th by Frank Darabont from AMC. This research focuses on 2 things, namely: (1) what types of sarcasm words are stated by the characters in “The Walking Dead” television series, and (2) how are the responses toward the sarcasm words stated by the characters in “The Walking Dead” television series. The research data consist of 43 data taken by randomly uses techniques of random sampling based on descriptive qualitative methods. The data used the excerpts of conversation in “The Walking Dead” television series. This research used the theory of the type of sarcasm by Elizabeth Camp (2011) and some supporting theories such as the language impoliteness theory by Culpeper (1996) used to analyze the responses of sarcasm. Based on the finding data, there are four types of sarcasm found in seven episodes of “The Walking Dead” television series: Propositional Sarcasm, Lexical Sarcasm, ‘Like’-Prefixed Sarcasm, and Illocutionary Sarcasm. Based on result of analyze data, it can be concluded that the type of Propositional Sarcasm, which is most widely used in this television series is indeed tries to insulted, mockerly, and ridicule of the condition of its audience. However, in some circumstances, the antagonistic characters in this television series uses sarcasm as a weaponly to intimidated its victims.
