Abstract

This research aims to identify EFL students' challenges in comprehending authentic listening materials. It also aims to describe EFL students’ strategies to cope with their challenges in comprehending authentic listening materials. It was designed as a qualitative method with a case study approach. It involved 44 students of the second semester of the English Education Department in UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. It was conducted in the class of Interpretative listening. To obtain the data, questionnaire and interview were used by the researcher. The close-ended questionnaire and open-ended interview were used to get detailed and additional information about EFL students’ challenges and strategies to cope with their challenges in comprehending authentic listening materials. The findings concluded two things. First, EFL students had internal challenges in comprehending authentic listening materials. The challenges consisted of they lack understanding of the various dialects, mixtures of many structures, hard to understand linguistically, biased language culturally, vocabulary, the speedy speech, unfamiliar accent, unclear voice, and back sound interference. The challenges were also caused by external factors; those are environmental noise such as sounds of traffic or people talking, lack of vocabulary, lack of experience, and lack of concentration. Second, cognitive strategies as the strategies used by EFL students to cope with their challenges in comprehending authentic listening materials. It can be seen by the students who repeated the audio, paused the part of the audio, wrote and summarize the information, used a dictionary, interpreted the information used own language, used earphones, and turn up the volume. In conclusion, this research formulates that authentic listening materials is challenging for EFL students to comprehend. Then, this research recommends that the teachers or lectures can employ the best strategies to cope with any challenges in comprehending authentic listening materials.
