Abstract

Teaching pronunciation is an important aspect of foreign language instruction. It is a crucial skill for students to have before they speak. Therefore, to teach pronunciation, the teacher should have a selection of methods and techniques. The teacher may use technology such as audio visual aids such as music in learning pronunciation to make it fun and to increase their motivation. This study focuses on the influence of English pop songs to improve students’ pronunciation ability. This study proposed; 1) To find out the student’s pronunciation ability before listening to English Pop Songs. 2) To carry out the student’s pronunciation ability after listening to English Pop Songs. 3) To find out how significant is the student’s improvement in pronunciation ability before and after listening to English Pop Songs. This research applied a quantitative method with a pre-experimental investigation in one class. The data was collected using the pre-test and post-test techniques. The research was conducted at MTs Kifayatul Achyar, Bandung. The participants of this research were 28 students of the eighth grade. The sample was selected by purposive sampling. This study was conducted of five meetings, with one pre-test, three treatments, and one post-test. The findings of this study showed that the mean pre-test score before listening to English Pop songs is 12. On the other hand, the mean post-test after Listening to English Pop songs is 17. Moreover, the paired sample test result indicated that the significance value (2-tailed) was 0.000 and less than 0.05, indicating that it was H_0 is rejected and H_a is accepted and the N-Gain score of 0.5 indicates that the significant difference is massive. In conclusion, the influence of English pop songs toward students’ pronunciation ability have resulted in significant improvements. The method demonstrates that the influence of English pop songs is effective in teaching and improving students’ pronunciation ability.
