Abstract

Movies are a means of fulfilling people's needs for entertainment, including comedy movies. Comedy movies are the most popular genre in terms of entertainment because they provide humor and can provoke laughter. On the other side, the effort to create the humorous situations also cause the dialogues in comedy movies become less effective because they are too long, too little information, unclear, the responses given are irrelevant, or even the information provided is not based on existing facts or realities. This phenomenon was found in a comedy movie entitled The Three Stooges (2012). The objectives of this research are to describe the types of Grice's maxims are flouted in The Three Stooges movie and to analyze how the flouting of Grice's maxims creates humorous situations in The Three Stooges movie. The main theory used in this research is The Flouting of Grice's Maxims (The Cooperative Principles) by Herbert Paul Grice (1975) and The Theory of Humor by Attardo Salvatore (1994). The method of this research is qualitative-descriptive with content analysis approach. The total data that had been obtained was 27 data in the form of dialogues between characters in The Three Stooges movie (written). The results of this study shows that the flouted maxims in The Three Stooges movie are the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. While the flouting strategies found are giving too much information, giving too little information, using hyperbole, using metaphor, using irony, using sarcasm, being irrelevant, and being obscure. However, the maxim that most often flouted was the maxim of relation by being irrelevant, namely 10 cases (37,03%). Concerning the emergence of humorous situations, the writer found that all the flouting maxims data (27 data) created humorous situations in The Three Stooges movie. The types of humorous situations created are hostility, incongruity, and release. However, the type of humorous situation that mostly appears in The Three Stooges movie is incongruity with 22 cases (81,48%). Based on the result, the writer meets the conclusion that the flouting of the Grice’s maxims has a relationship with emergence of humorous situations in The Three Stooges movie.
