Abstract

This research discussed compound words in English translation of surah AlKahf. The main purpose of the research is to explain compound words in English translation of surah Al-Kahf. There are two research question that formulated in this study namely to identify types of compound words and to find out categories of the meanings of compound words derived. From the two statements of the problem above, then this research was analyzed by using McCarthy (2002) theory. The method used in this study is the descriptive qualitative analysis method. This method helps the writer to describe the results of the data that has been analyzed. The results of this research show that there have been found compound words in the English translation of surah Al-Kahf based on McCarthy (2002) theory, in which, there are 3 types of compound words, namely compound nouns, compound adjectives and compound verbs. The writer also found the categories of meanings of compound words namely endocentric compound (headed) and exocentric compound (headless). Of all the data that has been analyzed by the writer, there are 26 data including compound words, 26 of which are divided into three types namely 16 data including compound nouns, 6 data including compound verbs and 4 data including compound adjectives. In addition, 26 data are divided into 2 categories based on meanings of compound words namely 24 data including exocentric compound word (headless) and 2 data including endocentric compound (headed).
