Abstract
Speaking as well as doing other activities are the result of the brain's working process, therefore speech disfluency can occur when what humans say is not in line with what is planned in the brain. This disfluency does not only occur in those who experience speech disorders such as stuttering for example, but also in those who do not stutter depending on their psychological condition as on the case of Megan Washington as a stutterer and Joseph Gordon Levitt as a non-stutterer. Thus, the purpose of this research is to find out the type of disfluency that occurs in the speeches of Megan Washington and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the cause of the speech disfluency, and the difference in the speech disfluency between Megan Washington as a stutterer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a non-stutterer. This research was conducted by using a qualitative approach and descriptive method that focused the analysis on the utterances of Megan Washington and Joseph Gordon-Levitt that contained difluency based on the framework of Johnson and Conture. From the results of the study, several conclusions were drawn. First, from 87 data of Megan Washington's speech, there were 21 interjections, 20 blocks, 18 sound prolongations, 14 repetitions of individual sound or syllable, 6 revisions, 5 monosyllabic whole-word repetitions, and 3 phrase repetitions. Meanwhile, from 22 data of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's speech, there were 12 interjections, 4 revisions, 4 monosyllabic whole-word repetitions, and 2 phrase repetitions. Second, Megan Washington's speech disfluencies were caused by her condition as a stutterer and a communication media. Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's speech disfluencies were caused by processing load, conversational partner familiarity, gender, and several other causes such as the characteristics or relationships of conversational partners and communication media. Third, some of the differences in speech disfluency between Megan Washington and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are the types they produced, the number of occurrences of the disfluency, and the causes of the disfluency.
