Abstract
This study examines the types of moods used and the interpersonal meaning that is realized in the text of Barack Obama's speech entitled "Islamic Society of Baltimore Addressee". The text of this speech is interesting to analyze, because the contents of the speech text illustrate the high level of discrimination against Muslims and Islamophobia in America. In addition, another interesting thing is that in the midst of the controversy between Muslims and non-Muslim communities in America, Barack Obama is a president who loves differences, one of which is religious differences. The purpose of this study is to describe the types of moods used, and to investigate the interpersonal meaning realized in the speech text delivered by Barack Obama. The methodology used in this research is qualitative text analysis. The main source of data in this study is the text of Barack Obama's speech on the official American Rhetoric website. This research focuses on clauses relating to Muslims in America or Islamophobia. Data analysis used the following steps: first, reading the entire text of the speech, finding and selecting clauses that contain Islamophobia in America, analyzing clauses that have been defined based on mood elements in the structure of mood types, then analyzing clauses based on mood -residue realized, describes the interpersonal meaning of each datum based on the basic speech role. The final step, the writer concludes the results of this study. In conducting this research, the author uses the theory of Linda Gerrot and Peter Wignall (1994). The results of data analysis show that there are 4 types of mood used in the speech text of the "Islamic Society of Baltimore Addressee", namely marked declarative mood, unmarked declarative mood, interrogative mood, and imperative mood. Then, the interpersonal meaning that is realized in the speech text is based on mood-residue elements and basic speech roles, the most commonly used subjects are "We", the most commonly used finites are "do" and "are", the residue elements most widely used. It is complement, and the most dominant role-commodities exchange is giving information. Barack Obama provides a lot of information about the form of Islamophobia that occurs in America. The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that the most dominant type of mood used is the unmarked declarative mood. Based on the structure of the unmarked declarative mood, the order of the mood elements is the subject at the beginning and followed by the finite. Through the declarative mood and the subject "we", which are widely used by Barack Obama, it aims to provide information that in essence Islamophobia is not only the responsibility of Muslims but is also the responsibility of all Americans.
