Abstract

This research is entitled The Style of Register and Their Functions in Standup Comedy Shows in YouTube. The objective of this research is to identify both the kind of the register and the function of the register used by the judges or the comics in their conversations. The data are obtained from the social media, YouTube. The videos showed the comedies in the form of standup comedy show. This research used the descriptive method. Through that method, the writer watched some standup comedy shows. Afterwards the writer analyzed the conversations of the judges from YouTube to know about the kinds and the functions of the register. From 40 data which were analyzed, the writer obtained three kinds of the register used, e.g., casual, intimate and consultative register. The writer found 30 casual registers, 8 intimate registers, and 2 consultative registers. In this research, frozen register and deliberative register cannot be found. The register functions which are used by the judges in America’s Got Talent are the function of referential high information content and the function of referential low information content. There are 33 data for the function of referential high information. Moreover, there are 7 data for the function of referential low information. Referential high affective content and referential low affective content are not found in the functions of register of this research. In writer’s opinion, both style and function of register can be applied in the daily conversation by the language users. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengidentifikasi baik jenis maupun fungsi register yang digunakan para juri maupun komika dalam percakapannya. Data diperoleh dari media sosial, YouTube. Video video tersebut menampilkan lawakan dalam bentuk pertunjukan standup comedy. Penelitian ini menggunakan metoda deskriptif. Melalui metoda ini, penulis menonton beberapa pertunjukan standup comedy. Setelah itu, penulis menganalisa percakapan para juri dari YouTube mengenai jenis register maupun fungsinya. Dari 40 data yang dianalisa, penulis menemukan tiga jenis register yang digunakan, antara lain: register kasual, register intim dan register kosultatif. Penulis menemukan 30 register kasual, 8 register intim, dan 2 register konsultatif. Dalam penelitian ini, register beku dan register deliberatif tidak ditemukan. Fungsi register yang digunakan oleh para juri dalam America’s Got Talent merupakan fungsi referential high information content dan fungsi referential low information content. Terdapat 33 data untuk fungsi referential high information. Lebih jauh lagi, terdapat, 7 data untuk fungsi referential low information. Fungsi referential high affective content dan fungsi referential low affective content tidak ditemukan dalam fungsi register penelitian ini. Menurut penulis, baik gaya maupun fungsi register bisa diaplikasikan dalam keseharian penutur bahasa dengan menggunakan adab pemakaian bahasa.
