Abstract
Cadmium Sulfide (CdS) is one of the semiconductor materials this widely applied as catalysts, sensors, and medicinal materials. Precipitation method for synthesizing CdS successfully performed using CdSO4 as a precursor and Na2S as a precipitate agent. The variation calcination was at 200, 300, and 400ºC conducted to determine the effect of temperature changes on the crystal size, crystallinity, and band gap. This study aims to synthesize CdS which is being applied towards the treatment of methylene blue waste by photocatalysis. The characterization of the synthesized CdS carried out using XRD and UV-DRS. The result of characterization using XRD has resulted in the crystal size determined using the method by Debye Scherrer and obtained crystal sizes between 31-35 nm belong to the nanocrystal scale. The crystallinity of the synthesized CdS was determined using the Landi method. And the crystallinity was between 44-50%. The result of characterization using UV-DRS has resulted in a decrease in the bandgap with a value between 2,29-2,33 eV. Application of CdS for photocatalytic treatment of methylene blue with several variations, namely variations in CdS mass, irradiation time, methylene blue concentration, and pH of methylene blue. The higest percentage of decolorization was produced at 200ºC at 95,37% by using a mass of 75 mg CdS against 10 mL of 10 ppm methylene blue solution at pH 7 with an irradiation time of 180 minutes.
