Abstract

Bill Gates is a well-known public figure in the field of entrepreneurship in social media, he joined a talk show to discuss the current epidemic on Trevor Noah's YouTube channel. This study aims to determine the types of politeness strategies and the effect of FTAs used by Bill Gates in a talk show entitled The Daily Social Distancing Show: Bill Gates on Fighting Coronavirus. This research is a descriptive qualitative research where the analysis focuses on the utterances expressed by Bill Gates when answering questions from Trevor Noah as an interviewer, that containing politeness strategies and face-threatening act. Identification, categorization, explanation and conclusion are the ways data are analyzed. This research shows that Bill Gates uses this type of politeness strategy. From the 60 data in the form of Bill Gates' speech, it was found 39 times using positive politeness, 20 times using negative politeness, and eight times using bald on record. The dominant strategy used by Bill Gates is positive politeness which means Bill Gates wants to build a closer relationship with interlocutor and reduce the distance between the both of them. Bill Gates also uses two types of FTA, namely the negative face of the speaker and the negative face of the interlocutor. Found seven times the utterances that show Bill Gates doing negative face threatening act against the speaker or himself. Found 10 times the utterances that show the negative face-threatening act of the interlocutor made by Bill Gates. The effect of the use of the two FTAs is the threat of the negative face of the speaker and the threat of the negative face of the interlocutor. The dominant face-threatening act used by Bill Gates is the act of threatening the negative face of the interlocutor, thus giving the effect to threaten the negative face of the interlocutor.
