Abstract

Conversation is a thing that cannot be separated from daily life as a form of communication. In conversation, there is an exchange of information between the speaker and the listener. There is a message that should be conveyed properly to the interlocutor in the conversation. In daily life, there is often found the fails of conversation due to a violation of the cooperative principle called maxim. When the speaker does not observe the maxim, it can make the conversation does not go well and the message is not conveyed properly. Meanwhile, when the listener can interpret the speaker’s utterance that is flouting maxims and can infer the implied meaning of the utterance, then the implicature or an understanding of the implied meaning can occur there. The listener has the knowledge of context and knowledge of the world in understanding the implied meaning of the utterance. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to find out the flouted maxims in the utterance of public figures and the implicatures that occur from those flouted maxims. This research was conducted by using a pragmatic approach and qualitative method that focused on analyzing the utterances of public figures interviewed in The Graham Northon Show that did not observe the maxims and raised the implicature based on the framework of Herbert Paul Grice. From the results of the study, several conclusions were drawn. First, from the 45 data of the utterance of the public figures, there were 12 utterances flouted maxims of Lady Gaga from two videos, 14 utterances of Taylor Swift from two videos, 9 utterances of Katy Perry, 4 utterances of Nicki Minaj, 3 utterances of Adele, and 3 utterances of Jessie J from two videos. Besides that, there were various flouted maxims committed by the speakers, those are 28 maxims of relation, 18 maxims of quantity and manner, and 7 maxims of quality. Second, there were found implicatures that occurred from the flouted maxims of the utterance. The utterances that are flouted maxims are interpreted by the listeners as observing maxims. The listeners infer the implied meaning of the utterance to be understood and can receive the message conveyed in the conversation.
