Abstract

Word shortenings are the forms made of fewer characters than the full form of a word or a combination of words that people use to do computer-mediated communication. The communication is usually done through social media, such as Twitter. On Twitter, people usually use shortened words due to the character limitation determined in a tweet. Since shortened words are included, it makes the language that is used on Twitter becomes informal. Thus, this research aims to analyze word shortening strategies of English colloquial language used on Twitter. This research is conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method that focuses on analyzing the tweets marked by the hashtag #Covid19Vaccine written from January to April 2021. The data are analyzed based on the shortening theories stated by Weakly (2006), Schendl (2001), and Tournier (1985). The result of this research shows several conclusions. First, there are five types of shortening found in the data; clipping, acronym, initialism, blending, and contraction. Clipping is divided into three types; back-clipping, fore-clipping, and back-fore clipping, while contraction is divided into two types; apostrophe contraction and compressed contraction. Second, every shortening process includes the syllable pattern change. However, the other changes, which are stress shift, phonemic change, and spelling change, are not always involved. Third, every word has different amounts of shortened forms. Some words have numerous shortened forms, while some other do not have too many shortened forms. The words with the most numbers of shortened forms are because and thank you. In contrast, the words with the least number of shortened forms that have been analyzed in this research are mostly the words that refer to the name of organizations, countries, and specific terms of certain fields.
