Abstract

Politeness is an important role in maintaining a conversation for good conversation. Politeness strategies including for request do not always imply a conscious effort to behave politely and refer to regular language expressions and refer to efforts to speak politely. However, there are still some difficulties in applying politeness and using proper language in communication. Therefore, the researcher is and need to do research on the topic of politeness strategies. The research entitled “Politeness Strategies of Request in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri Movie.” This research presents the aim to find out what politeness is used in the film, as well as the factors that drive the use of politeness, this topic with research questions: 1) What politeness strategies of request are used in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri movie? 2) What factors influence the characters to use politeness strategies of request in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri movie? This research used descriptive qualitative method and the main theories were from Brown and Levinson. Based on the research findings, the results showed that 21 data represented four politeness strategies of request used by the characters in Three Billboards Ebbing Missouri movie. There were 11 data of the bald on-record, 4 data of positive politeness, 4 data of negative politeness, and 2 data of off-record politeness. Meanwhile, the factors that influence the characters to use politeness strategies of request were sociological variables that cover 9 data social distance, 10 data relative power, and 2 data the rank of imposition. Based on the research above, it can be concluded that most of the characters in the movie used a bald on record politeness strategy when they asked for a request from other people, and they always used a direct request. However, they showed closeness, social distance, and relative power between the hearer and the speaker, in which the strategy used was mostly influenced by sociological variables.
