Abstract

Deixis is one part of Pragmatics field which is focused on reference expressions. One various of deixis is social deixis. This research deals with the social deixis expressions in Charles Dickens’s “A Message from the Sea” and “Doctor Marigold” short stories. This research purposed to find out the types and the functions of social deixis expressions in “A Message from the Sea” and “Doctor Marigold” short stories. The data obtained from short stories are expressions in the form of words and phrases. The research method used a qualitative descriptive approach. This method produces descriptive data in the form of written words from the speaker in the short story. This research uses Levinson’s (1983) theory discusses the type of social deixis, and Nababan’s (1987) theory discusses the functions of social deixis. The researcher collected 56 data from both short stories that contained the type of social deixis and their functions. The results of this research show that from “A Message from the Sea” short story found 32 data, and the results from “Doctor Marigold” found 24 data. The types of social deixis are used in both short stories are categorized into relational social deixis and absolute social deixis. Relational social deixis is classified into 31 speaker and referent; eight speaker and addressee; three speaker and settings. Absolute social deixis is categorized into three data as authorized speaker; and 11 data as authorized recipients. The functions of social deixis are found from both short stories are categorized into 24 data to show the politeness system, seven to differentiate the social status, 17 data to clarify the closeness, and eight to clarify the social position. Therefore, it can be concluded that the most commonly used in the types of social deixis is speaker and referent, while the function is politeness systems.
