Abstract
Turn taking is a central feature of conversation that is made necessary in communication. People find it very difficult to talk and listen simultaneously, especially when the speech is relatively complex, and therefore, for reasonable efficiency in conversation, there must be some means of allocating turns. Based on that statement, this research focused on kinds of turn taking and components of turn taking in Bruce Almighty movie. This research can be formulated into two problems. First are kinds of turn taking are used in Bruce Almighty movie. Second, are the kinds of components of turn taking in Bruce Almighty movie base on Sacks’ theory et al. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. It contains of identification, classification and description of the data. The data took from Bruce Almighty Movie by using purposive sampling and analyzed data by categorizing into the kinds of turn taking by Sacks et al theory and used the theory of Sacks et al for the component of turn taking. The results of the research showed that there are four kinds of turn taking in Bruce Almighty movie. First, 140 back channelings. Second, 20 overlappings. Third, 5 completions. Fourth, 41 body talk. There are four parts in turn taking components: first, 42 sentences. Second, 4 clauses. Third, 6 phrase and last, 11 lexicons.
