Abstract

This study aims to determine the reference analysis or how reference analysis making an impact, especially on news articles. The researcher focused to identify the category of reference found in the covid-19 articles. In addition to know how the reference build the cohesion in the articles, and to identify the similarities of reference-based cohesion among the three articles. This study uses a qualitative method since the script of report text published in CNN news media is in the form of words or sentences. Furthermore this research used Halliday’s theory and Paltridge’s theory. The results of the study show that the most frequently occurring reference items are personal reference categories in the form of exophoric reference categories with a total of 140 findings. Furthermore, reference items bind objects that are inside or outside the text. This cohesion makes the text more effective in the way it is written. A text is not long-winded because of the reference items. The existence of general knowledge and understanding of the context in the text helps the reader to be relevant to the references in the text.
