Abstract
Turn-taking strategies are how the speaker takes the turn and the speaker can use several ways to turn or start speaking in order to know the meaning of someone's purpose so that people can understand. The turn allocation is a rule used to select the next speaker. Therefore, the researcher is interested and need to conduct the research on this topic with the following research questions: 1) What strategies of turn-taking are used in the How to Survive a Pandemic Podcast by Michael Greger?, 2) How are the allocations of turn-taking strategies used in How to Survive a Pandemic Podcast by Michael Greger? This research used qualitative descriptive method and the theories were from Stenstrom (1994) and Sacks (1974) to answer research problems. The method of this sampling technique used simple random sampling. However, the simple random sampling technique does not change the frequency of the real data or the population data. According to Margono (2004, p. 126) states that simple random sampling is a technique to obtain samples that are directly carried out on the sampling unit. This each sampling unit as an isolated population element has the same opportunity to be a sample or to represent the population. The real population of this data is about 590 data was found but the research findings showed the represent of the real data which is 80 data as a simple random sampling. There were the types of turn-taking were taking the floor of starting up (2 data), taking over (16 data) and interrupting 3 data, holding the floor of filled pause and verball filler (23 data), silent pause (2 data), lexical repetition (18 data). However, no data of new start (0 data) and yielding the floor found in this study. Appealing (1 data) and giving up (6 data). Meanwhile, the allocations of turn-taking were the current speaker select next speaker (9 data). However, no data of next speaker self-selects (0 data) found in this study. It could be concluded that turn-taking strategy needs to be applied in conversation. The participants in the podcast follow the rule of turn-taking, especially for taking the floor strategies. Holding the floor strategies becomes the dominant strategies because the real common of the human talk about is to use the word “Umm and You know” as the most word are used in the world. While the turn allocation of turn-taking is rarely found in the podcast.
