Abstract

This study describes students’ public speaking preparation processes in EFL classroom setting. However, as EFL students, they are expected to not only master the language but also communicate well with the audience in the class before practice it in the real public. Preparation is often considered as the important thing to design a good public speaking delivery. The topic above represents the problems of the research which formulated in the research questions: (1) How do the students prepare for their public speaking in public speaking class? (2) What are the difficulties that they face in preparing it? (3) What strategies do they use to cope with those difficulties? The study employs a qualitative descriptive study which takes participants from fourth semester English Department students at State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. It uses interview to collect the data. The data reveal that the students prepare their public speaking in different ways such as getting assignment from the lecturer, understanding the assignment, defining topic and sub-topic, searching material and so forth. They also face difficulties in preparing public speaking including lack of vocabulary, difficulty in pronouncing some vocabularies, managing public speaking anxiety, mastering material and so on. Furthermore,they have their own strategies to cope with the difficulties, for example by opening the dictionary to look for the meaning of the words, listening English song to know the correct pronunciation, and so forth. All these results indicate that in the preparation process the students get some advantages of doing public speaking assignments, including practicing all language skills, improving their critical thinking, promoting learning and solving their own problems in learning process.
