Abstract

AGIS Elementary School is an elementary school that applies International-based school. It has vision to become an outstanding institution that shapes Islamic and internationally-knowledgeable generation. To encourage this commitment, internationally, this institution uses ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) of Cambridge curriculum as one of main curriculum, and uses English as a medium of teaching or communication, particularly in English teaching. Therefore, in English teaching, the teacher sometimes switches the language from English into Bahasa Indonesia or on the contrary. Code switching is one of part of sociolinguistics referring to alternation two or more languages. It is commonly done by people who have more than one language. In this research, the researcher investigates the problems of code switching that done by the English teachers covering the types, factors, and functions of code switching. This research is supported by some theories. Those are bilingualism, general concepts of code switching, the types of code switching, the factors of code switching, and the functions of code switching. The research design applied in this study is qualitative case study. Observations and interviews are the method used in collecting data. The data resource is from the English teachers as the subjects of this research. The researcher employed descriptive method in analyzing the data. The result of this research is that there are three types of code switching that were found by the researcher. They are tag switching, intrasentensial switching, and intersentensial switching. Based on the factors of code switching, there are three factors that done by the English teacher. It refers to the more social and psychological conditions. They are the individual itself (the teacher), the situation of circumstance (the change of topic), and the English competence (the student). Meanwhile, based on the functions, there are six functions of code switching. They are Quotation, Addressee Specification, Interjection, Repetition, Message qualification, and Personalization. Regarding to the result of this research, it is hoped that using of code switching can help the students understand more in mastering English. In addition, the researcher really expects that the results of this research will give new contribution in development of scientific language, especially in sociolinguistics.
