Abstract

Melodrama is one of genre of popular literature which tells the story, play, or film in which the characters show stronger emotions than real people usually do, discusses in this research. The main reason of this research is the character of melodrama story which changes continually over time lead to the formula of melodrama divided into several periods. But there is one character that does not change until now. That is character of plot which is rather complicated, and complex characters. To specify the research, the analysis divided into two statements of problems, namely: 1. How is formula of melodrama constructed in Gayle Forman’s If I Stay? 2. How the complicated plot is describe and support melodrama formula in Gayle Forman’s If I Stay? This research used structuralism as literary approach. Thus the data will be cited, classified, described, and analyzed systematically in able to answer the question in the statement problems. For supporting analysis the researcher used Cawelti’s, Adi’s, Mintz’s, Strinati’s, Ledger’s theories to solve the questions of the research. The data used in this research is Gayle Forman’s If I Stay novel, downloaded from internet, and publish by Dutton Book in 2009. Based on the analysis of problems, Gayle Forman’s If I Stay novel include to genre of melodrama story. It can be seen from the intrinsic elements of the novel that build it, especially from character of plot. It is really support melodrama formula to makes Gayle Forman’s If I Stay more realistic, complicated in the story line, and can emerge emotional the reader. The result of this research showed that Gayle Forman’s If I Stay constructed by the complicated plot of melodrama formula. Although, character of melodrama formula change time to times following conventional character but the character of plot is still rather complicated. Therefore, melodrama has different character with the other genre of popular literature.
