Abstract
This undergraduate thesis analyzes about the abnormality of two main characters in Chelsea Cain's Heartsick. The novel is about beauty serial killer who was kidnapped and tortured the detective, Archie Sheridan obsessed with her. It shows the psychiatric problem toward both characters. The research can be formulated into several problems. Firstly, the abnormality of Gretchen's character constructed in Cain's Heartsick. Secondly, the abnormality of Archie's character constructed in Cain's Heartsick. The last, the difference between them. To answer the research questions, the theories of psychoanalysis Lois Tyson and Theodore Millon have been used. It aims to reveal in the literary works. Despite of its imaginary disposition, the characters in this literary works were created so much human-like in real life. The literary works basically were born by author's psychological experiences in the real world. The method of qualitative descriptive which is a form of writing and giving interpretation to the result descriptively has been used in this research. The writer does not use quantification or numerals for getting the result. The data have been taken from one novel then the data which were related to research, classifying, interpreting the whole, and finding the conclusion. The result of analysis, there are two main characters have psychiatric problems, which are found; two main characters are called sadistic and masochistic. Gretchen is sadist. She enjoyes on others suffering, cruelty, aggressive, inflicting pain on others, lack of remorse and guilty feeling, and fascination violence. The abnormal behavior which were experienced by Gretchen were caused by the domination of id. Ego could not balance the opposite demand between id and superego. Eventually ego and superego suffered defeat make her pleasure on others suffering even losing of human life. Different set of the first, Archie’s id is weakness. His superego dominations made himself being subject to suffer and enjoy on distress. Finally, that the abnormality in Cain's character are divided into two personalities disorder; 1) sadistic charaterized by Gretchen, 2) masochistic charaterized by Archie. While the differences between them, Gretchen achieve joy by inflicting pain and Archie achieve joy by being subject to pain.
