The research was conducted to analyze speech act of emotional state expressed by the characters in Hamlet drama. The research explored speech act of emotional state applied by the characters and the reason why the characters expressed their emotional state to their interlocutors. The research applied the study of pragmatics to analyze speech acts used by the characters to express their emotional state to their interlocutors. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The dialogues or scripts of characters consisting emotional state in Hamlet drama were taken as the source of data. There were 18 research findings analyzed by using Searle’s theory of speech act. The research findings of the analysis could be seen as follows: The first, there were five speech acts applied by the characters in Hamlet drama to express their emotional state to their interlocutors. They were directive, expressive, representative, commissive, and declaration. Directive was the most applied speech act by characters in the drama. There were eight research findings showing that the characters applied directive by commanding, ordering, requesting, and advising to express their emotional state to their interlocutors. The second, there were 19 forms of emotional state applied by the characters to express their emotional state to their interlocutors. They were annoyance, love, happiness, excitement, anger, trust, anxiety, fury, fear, shock, guilt, gloom, sadness, dislike, merriment, despair, aggravation, alertness, and panic. The characters applied directive in delivering anger, fear, annoyance, love, trust, alertness, anxiety, fury, and panic to express their emotional state to their interlocutors. This research is expected to be useful for the readers in studying the field of pragmatics, specifically speech act in emotional state. It is also suggested that other researchers are able to conduct other studies concerning emotional state from the different point of view.
