Abstract

Queer coming of age film is a film that focuses on a teenager and their sexuality. The character of this film, usually has to face problems, which is caused by their sexuality that is different from others. The problems that often be faced by the character of this genre, is usually caused by two factors; psychological and social factors. The psychological factor that is faced, generally is the inner conflict between the character and their own selves. Besides, the social factor that influence the character, mostly come from the closest people, such as family and friends. Those factors are also felt by the characters in this research in those three films; James, Jackpot and Love is All You Need? On the other hand, in analyzing those three films, this reseach uses queer theory that focuses on gay identity. Besides that, the additional theory that is used in this research are queer formula and identity fomation. Other than that, this research methodology uses descriptive qualitative and discourse analysis method. From this research, gay identity from those three films are presented differently. The difference of presenting those three films above is actually in line with the aims of the films. In the first film, entitled James, the gay identity of the character is presented by showing off fundamental units that refer to the homosexuality. This is intended to the audience to understand how a gay teenager lives in heterosexist world, by using film technique. Meanwhile, in the second film entitled Jackpot, the identity formation that refers to gay identity is explained briefly. This is related to the purpose of the film itself, that is to remember how a gay teenager lives before internet exists. On the other hand, a film entitled Love is All You Need?, the gay idenity of the character and their relation with the people around them. It is related to the aim of the film, that is as a warning to the audience about violance that happens towards gay teenagers. Meanwhile, from those three short films above, the film that describes identity formation in detrail is only Love is All You Need?, while the other films do not depict the stages gradually.
