Abstract

Language has a power in daily life as a media of communication for human beings. The speaker and the audients are informant components in communication. If both of them can understand each other about they are talking about, thus generally their communication reach the goal. One of the goals of communication is when the audients gives the effect from what the speaker said, such as nodding head or giving smile, it is called speech act. By doing this research, intends to find out 1) the type and function of speech act in Dr. Zakir Naik’s speeches and 2) the effect to the audients. In this research, the researcher used Searle’s theory in explaining types of speech act there are representative, directive, expressive, commisive and declaration, then the function of each type from Finegan’s theory. The researcher also used Austin’s theory to know the effect from Dr. Zakir Naik’s speeches. To analyze the data, the researcher used descriptive method. This research applied descriptive method to identify the type and function of speech act and to analyze the effects of those speeches of Dr. Zakir Naik to the audients. The data used in this research are taken from the video of Dr. Zakir Naik’s speeches from YouTube in http://www.youtube.com/ with the account channel Lampu Islam. The researcher found 92 data was included into type of speech act. There are 61 data for representative types, 17 data for directive types, 13 data for expressive types and 1 data for declaration types. Then the researcher found 7 effects from utterance was included into types of speech act. The total effects from nodding head are 44 data, giving applause are 17 data, giving smile are 12 data, answering the question are 9 data, shacking head are 3 data, knitting forehead are 3 data and following the command are 2 data. As a result, the researcher get the conclusion that there are four of five types speech acts, representative type is frequently used in speeches of Dr. Zakir Naik, it has 61 data. Then nodding head is frequently appearing as effect from those speeches. It is means the most utterance from the speaker are understood by the audients in speeches of Dr. Zakir Naik.
