Abstract

Social deixis is a pragmatics subtopic that connects language and context in a speech event. Social deixis consists of politeness, a social relationship of the participants, and honour of someone. In football life, more specifically in supporters' chants, social deixis represents supporters’ expression of honour and a sign of relationship towards football players and coaches. For this reason, this study was conducted with the statement of problems as: "What kinds of social deixis are used on supporters' chants in the English Premier League?" and "What are the functions of the usage of social deixis related to football players and coaches in the premier league?" The study used a descriptive qualitative research method, using Levinson and Filmore's theories and other related ones. The result showed there were 69 deictic expressions from 50 chants (28 social deixis expressions as referent honorific, 9 social deixis expressions as addressee honorific, 6 social deixis expressions as bystander honorific, and 2 social deixis expressions as formality level, 22 social deixis expressions as authorised recipient, and 2 social deixis expressions as authorised speaker). Meanwhile the functions of social deixis were as the identification of authority (12 data), the identification of social identity (16 data), the expression of politeness and respect (17 data), and the expression of closeness and intimacy (5 data). As a result, social deixis signifies the honour of football players and coaches from the supporters in the form of chants, and the use of social deixis as a sign of the honour and dedication for football players and coaches from the loyal supporters of a football team.
