Abstract

Research of urban space in literary works is worth to be analyzed deeper, since it aims to reveal a space that exists in a different world, namely the world of fiction. Locational site in the literature may refer to two definitions, they are the places that can be visited by the readers in the actual world, then the places that only exists in the literary work, known as imaginative places. This study tries to explain the role of fictional elements in terms of constructing the urban space issue in the novel and the representation of urban space in the novel 'Imaginary City' (2017) by Rain Chudori. The study used Deep Locational Criticism as an approach to analyze the urban space. It is a type of literary criticism that emphasizes the issue of locational sites in the literature. The approach focuses on the fact that all literary texts are able to geographically located, for at least in the minds of the readers. This study used descriptive qualitative method in order to depict the findings of the research. Then the novel 'Imaginary City' was chosen as an object of the study, since the novel is able to present a city space from the point of view of the two anonymous characters, as the part of the city's inhabitants. As the result, the researcher found that each fictional elements have a significant role in terms of constructing the urban space in the novel. Then, the representation of urban space in the novel is not only about the urban landscape but also about the personal experience of the characters toward the city. The characters as the part of the city's inhabitants try to bring these places to be more alive, both with memories they had and their emotional site as a pair of lovers. The novel is also tries to show the urbanity side of the city which continues to strive towards modernity in more realistic and dramatic ways.
