Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that some students at the Islamic Junior High School in Bandung still have difficulties in learning English vocabulary. To solve these problems, clustering technique was chosen as a teaching technique. Clustering technique can make students more interested in learning English vocabulary. It can be used as an interesting technique to improve students' vocabulary mastery. The objective of this study are to determine the results of students' vocabulary mastery before implementing clustering technique, to find out the results of the students' vocabulary mastery after implementing clustering technique, and the last to find out the significant difference between students' vocabulary mastery before and after implementing clustering technique. In this research, the method used was a pre-experimental study. The population of this research is the second grade of MTs Al-Mukhtar that consist of two classes, VIII A and VIII B. The sample taken for the experimental class is VIII A, which consists of 20 students. The instrument for collecting data is a test, that pre-test and post-test. To analyze the collected data, the researcher used mean for normality test, standard deviation, hypothesis test, and index gain testing. The mean of pretest before being given treatment was 39.25 and after being given treatment was 75.7. Based on the findings above, it is known that the results are better than after being given treatment. Therefore, from the calculations in the t test, it is known that t_count is 17 while t_table is 2.1. This means that t_count is higher than t_table. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H_0) is rejected and (H_a) is accepted. This means that the students' vocabulary mastery is significant. From the explanation above, it can be concluded that the implementation of teaching English vocabulary using clustering technique at second grade of MTs Al-Mukhtar improves students' vocabulary mastery. The researcher recommends this technique can be useful for students in learning English to improve their vocabulary mastery. English teachers can apply this technique in teaching vocabulary.
