Abstract
Speech is one of the objects commonly used for linguistic research. As we know that speech is usually done by one person in front of many people and conveys information or orders to the listener. Speeches are usually delivered by someone who has authority such as a superior or someone who has a position. Besides being able to be watched live, because of the increasingly sophisticated era, speeches can also be watched online through several social media, one of which is Youtube. Youtube has become people's daily food today, because what we are looking for is on Youtube, ranging from speeches, tutorials, games, reviews, and others. In a speech, there are usually many linguistic theories, one of which is pragmatics. As used in this study, speech acts, especially directive illocutionary acts, are the main theory used in this study. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research where the data obtained are presented in written form. This study aims to determine the types of directive speech acts and what illocutionary functions are used in the video speech delivered by Emma Watson about “Gender Equality”. The writer analyzes the data by using speech act theory according to John Searle. In the results of this study, the authors were able to analyze 38 data that are included in the type of directive speech act and also into the illocutionary function.
