Abstract

Writing is one of language learning aspects beyond reading, speaking and listening. Writing is the thinker’s way of exploring the world, inside and out, since writing starts from ideas, and ideas start from thinking. Writing divided into several genre. One of the genres is narrative. Anderson & Anderson (2003:8) define narrative as piece of text which tells a story and, in doing so, entertains or inform the leader or a listener. This research promotes three questions. They are 1) What is the students’ creative thinking at third year students’ of English Education Department UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung?; 2) What is the students’ narrative writing ability?; and 3) Is there any relationship between students’ creative thinking and their narrative writing ability? To answer and give the solution for the problem above, this research used quantitative approach with the methods of data collection are questionnaire and writing test. The population of the study was 135 students but its sample was 20 students. After collecting and analyzing the data, the research showed that, firstly, the students’ creative thinking is in high qualification. It is proved by their average score (82.5). The highest score is 91 and the lowest one is 72. Secondly, the students’ narrative writing is in very good qualification. It is proved by their average score (84.55) with partial analysis covering 5 indicators they are content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The highest score is 93.7 and the lowest one is 70.3. Thirdly, the correlation between students’ creative thinking and their narrative writing ability is 0.57 and its categorized in average correlation. The coefficient of correlation is positive even though the degree of influence of variable x (creative thinking) toward variable y (narrative writing) was 32.49%. It means that 67.51% have been influenced by other factors.
