Abstract

Indonesian education is trying to continue providing learning and teaching activities as usual in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. E-learning is essential media to carry out the teaching and learning process in this situation. The researcher explores the use of E-learning in teaching speaking. In other words, this study identifies the teacher's teaching strategies to EFL students through E- learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, this study also describes the teachers' challenges in applying the strategies and the teacher's ways to cope with the challenges. This study used a qualitative method, particularly a case study method. The data were collected with two main instruments: an observation sheet and interview questions. The observation explores the teachers’ strategies in teaching speaking to EFL students through E-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview questions strengthen and confirm the data from the observation regarding the teachers' strategies in teaching speaking through E-learning. Additionally, the interview questions also reveal the teachers' challenges in applying the strategies and the teacher's ways to overcome the challenges. The result showed that in teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, several strategies are implemented by the teachers for teaching speaking to EFL students through E-learning, namely: drilling and chants, presentation and talks, dialogue, writing task, and outside class speaking. The teachers also state some challenges while applying the strategies, such as: low level of student's participation in the class, students' confidence and vocabulary. Consequently, to cope with the challenges, the teachers have several ways to deal with it: (1) looking for teaching references relevant to the students' situation during the present pandemic on the internet; (2) the teachers reminding the students regarding the completeness of the task at every meeting, (3) giving more time if it is related to facilities such as cellphones that their parents bring to work, internet networks, and others in the sense that students can collect their assignments every time. The findings of this research are expected to assist English teachers in developing appropriate teaching strategies. Especially in teaching speaking through E-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
