Abstract

A phonological error has become a phenomenon commonly done by someone who pronounces the second or the third language. The topic of this research is the phonological error made by the LPB members in reading English text. This research aims to describe: (1) what are kinds of the phonological error made by the LPB members in reading text. (2) What are factors that causal phonological error made by the LPB members in reading English text. This research is based on the theory of error that is put forward by H. Douglas Brown. Brown stated that the error is a deviation from the target language, it is a reflecting the competence of the learner. This research is included in qualitative descriptive research because this research uses data not in the form of numbers but the form of words or phrases. The method to collect data in this research is recording. This method is conducted by recording what LPB members pronounce when they read English text, and then the data are written into a phonetic symbol. In analyzing data, the researcher uses the constant comparative method. This method is conducted by distinguishing phonological systems between Indonesian and English languages. From the data that has been found, there are five errors in the consonant sound, namely; /v/, /ð/, /θ/, /dʒ/, and /ʃ/ sound, and there are fourteen errors in the vowel sound, namely; /æ/, /ʌ/, /e/, /i/, /ə/, /i:/, /u:/, /ɔ:/, /a:/, /ə:/, /ei/, /ai/, /əʊ/, and /aiə/ sound. Other than this, the error by the LPB members is caused by two main factors; inter lingual factor and intra lingual factor. In the end, the researcher concludes that the first language system is influencing to phonological error.
