Abstract

When it comes to communicating, politeness is crucial. Everyone has a face that they wish to be acknowledged as a symbol of social life. The key issue addressed in this study is the various types of politeness techniques and the factors that may impact the selection of these strategies. Brown and Levinson's politeness techniques are the central theory of this study. The researcher chooses a movie as the research object since it is one of the easiest mediums to examine politeness speech acts and thus politeness techniques may be studied more thoroughly. Forrest Gump is the film that was chosen. The data for this study came from the characters' expressions in the movie's dialogue, and it was done using the descriptive qualitative approach. The researcher analyzes the data in five steps: presenting all of the selected data, analyzing each sentence for politeness function, selecting types of politeness tactics, classifying the utterances according to their function, and concluding the data. The data were analyzed and divided into 58 categories: 5 off-record politeness, 10 Negative politeness, 18 Positive politeness, and 5 Bald On-Record politeness. Positive politeness outperforms other strategies, according to the study. Social distance is one of the most important characteristics that influence positive politeness. Forrest Gump characters speak with each other by employing politeness strategies that are based on the circumstances.
