Abstract

This research focuses on the detective formulation built on the film. This research is motivated by the high interest in literary works, especially popular ones in the form of films. This shows that there is a role in popular literature that has succeeded in attracting the attention of the audience. Therefore, this study aims to find out the reasons behind the popularity of the Sherlock Holmes movie. In analyzing this film, the researcher poses two research questions, as follows: how the role of the main character is applied in the Sherlock Holmes movie and how the pattern of action is built in the Sherlock Holmes movie. These two research questions were assessed through an interdisciplinary approach using a genre approach. For this research to be justified, the researcher uses the genre formula as a theoretical basis. In the end, researchers found two reasons why this film is so popular. 1). Sherlock Holmes movie implements the specific roles of each protagonist, such as detectives, criminals, victims, and people involved in crimes, to create an interesting story in the film. 2). The action pattern is the key to the film's popularity as it features adventure and a detective action formula full of obstacles to find the truth. The formula is built through the detective as a hero, suspense, and threat, setting in a modern city, the role of female characters, and changes in meaning in the story.
