Abstract

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between two words in a sentence. Prepositions are always followed by nouns (or pronouns). They are connective words that show the relationship between the nouns following them and one of the basic sentences elements: subject, verb, object, or complement. This study entitled An Analysis of prepositions in Hans Christian Andersen’s Short Story “The Little Boy and The Little Girl”. which is aimed to answer two research questions, those are: (1) To identify the meaning categories of prepositions which occur in “A Little Boy and A Little Girl” short story written by Hans Christian Andersen, and (2) to know the use of those prepositions. The main theories that are used to analyze the data is taken from (Swan: 1996) and (Quirk: 1973) which are also supported by many other scholars. The data for this research is taken from all sentences and phrases that emerge on the short story. Descriptive qualitative research method is applied to analyze the data. From 169 sentences or phrases which contain preposition word, there are 27 types of preposition that emerge within this short story, such as: off, toward, without, over, in, at, on, of, to, through, by, for, upon, from, into, up, across, out, above, after, among, around, behind, beside, down, under, with. From 27 types of prepositions there were found 47 functions which mean that one preposition might have more than one function. From 11 meaning categories of prepositions, this story only contain seven prepositions, those are: Position, place; Possession; Manner; Time; Direction; Identification; and Purpose, reason.
