Abstract

Everyone can use politeness when speaking in daily activities, whether formal or informal. The situation and social distance between the speaker and the listener can affect politeness, for example, in interviews between the host and the guest star. In this regard, this study uses video interviews of Avril and Zach in the Zach Sang Show, whose videos were taken through the YouTube channel as the object by analyzing their speech acts. This study has two objectives: first, to find out the types of politeness strategies used by Avril and Zach, and second, to determine the factors that influence them to use these politeness strategies. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, with Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory. The results of the analysis of researchers found 75 data types of politeness strategies used by Avril and Zach, namely five bald on record strategies, 65 positive politeness, three negative politeness, and two off-record. They use more positive politeness in their conversations because they often satisfy each other's positive faces to form close and good relations. Meanwhile, the researchers found 16 data factors that influenced them to use the politeness strategy, namely payoffs and sociological variables. The first factor is three record payoffs, two off-record payoffs, seven positive payoffs, and two negative payoffs. The second factor is sociological variables consisting of social distance, relative strength, and rank in imposition. In this study, researchers only found social distance as a factor that influenced Avril and Zach to use a politeness strategy once with the characteristic of using nicknames to refer to the other person. In contrast, interviews did not find relative strength and rank in imposition because there was no inequality of power and strength between Avril and Zach. In their conversations, they use all kinds of politeness strategies taking into account rewards and sociological variables.
