Abstract

This research focuses on the phenomenon of phonological interference that affects Indonesian speakers’ ability in pronouncing English sounds. This research intends to identify the types of phonological interference and the factors that caused the interference in MoFA’s press conference video entitled “Media Briefing of Covid-19 Vaccine Development in Indonesia.” The researcher applies the theory of phonological interference by Weinreich (1968) to analyze the types and the factors of phonological interference in the video. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive method and this research also uses content analysis approach. The data collection technique in the form of recording is used to combine the equivalence of the transcript and the video recording. The steps of analyzing data are data reduction, data display, data analysis and interpretation, and conclusion drawing. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found 50 data from the press conference video; 25 data of under-differentiation of phonemes, 6 data on over-differentiation of phonemes, 3 data of reinterpretation of distinctions, and 16 data of actual phone substitution. The researcher also found three factors that affect the speakers in the video, causing the phonological interference, to be specific: the absence of corresponding distinctions in primary language, different phonemic system, and different pronunciation of equivalent phonemes.
