Abstract

This study analyzes the adaptation of the plot of the novel Life Of Pi into a film with the same title. Therefore, in this study, there are three formulations of problems related to how the plot in the novel Life Of Pi, the plot in the film Life Of Pi, and the adaptation of the plot of the novel Life Of Pi into the film. The researcher applies the comparative literary criticism method using Kelly J. Mays' theory of plot in literary works to find research results. Then, the data collected in this study were obtained from the novel Life Of Pi by Yann Martel and the film Life Of Pi by Angs Lee. The results of this study indicate subtraction, addition and modification in the ecranization process flow from the novel to the film Life Of Pi. There are four subtraction data including three on exposition and one on climax. There are seven additional data, including three on the exposition, one on the climax, two on the falling action, and one on the conclusion. There are ten changes to the data, including three on the exposition, three on the climax, one on the falling action, one on the rising action, and two on the conclusions. The reduction process carried out by the director was deliberately intended to summarize the story and to make some parts easy to understand. Then additions and changes to the rising action and climax were made by the director to make the story in the film more interesting when watching compared to reading a novel. Then, considering that the media used between novels and films are different, of course, it will result in changes, but in the ecranization of Life Of Pi, it is still considered relevant to the story in the novel as the source of the work.
