Abstract
This study explores the students’ perceptions while studying English in an online class. This study is essential to know the support students get and the barriers they experience. This study is conducted to portray the learning English that happens to Indonesian students during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative approach, specifically, the study design for this study is a narrative inquiry. The researcher uses a narrative inquiry design to focus on students' personal experiences with online classes. This study selected two participants to participate in this study. This study used purposive sampling to select two participants. In the selection process, researchers prioritized their eligibility for inclusion. In the data collection process, the researcher conducts face-to-face interviews with the intended participant and also asks for photos of activities carried out by the participants. This study shows a result that there are several points; English learning experiences in an online class, the support students get during their online class, and the barriers do students find during an online class. First, students felt bored and not enthusiastic during an online class. Second, the support students get when learning online comes from themselves, they want to gain knowledge. However, their home environment is not supportive. Third, the barriers that students face during online classes are the many distractions in their home environment, they have difficulty understanding the material, physical problems, such as eye strain, and the difficulty dividing the time. In conclusion, the findings of this study indicate that the students find it easier to learn English in-person face-to-face than in an online classroom. Students’ independence or agency is essential in an online classroom because teachers’ direct guidance is limited. In other words, students’ participation in online education resulted from their self-determination, motivation, and personal interest and belief.
