Abstract
This research focuses on the analysis of personality dynamics and the effects of life and death instincts on the characters in John Steinbeck's To A God Unknown novel using Sigmund Freud's theory. The purpose of this research is to elaborate on the role of life and death instincts on the personality dynamics of the characters in the novel and explain the effects of those instincts on the characters. This research is structured for qualitative research. This research uses the descriptive method as the main method to present the existing data. The method helps researchers in inferring the characteristics of each character. The research uses an objective approach, in the context of literary works, the researcher uses a psychoanalytic approach. Researchers found 93 data that fall into categories related to life and death instincts and their effects based on citation taken from source of data. Based on the research conducted, the researcher found that the behavior of the characters is determined by the instincts of life and death in meeting their physical needs and wishing death. Furthermore, those instincts have a significant effect in terms of creating realistic, neurotic and moralistic anxiety.
