Abstract

ENGLISH : This research focuses on analyzing the character's development in the Cruella (2021) movie as caused by conflicts during the story. In literature, character development becomes essential because it leads to a development in the story. The purposes of this research are; (1) to find the characterizations of the main character and other characters that appear in Cruella (2) to reveal what conflicts arise between the main character and others in Cruella (3) to find out how the impact of conflicts towards character development of the main character in Cruella. The researcher uses the theory of Petrie & Boggs to define character, conflict, and character development. The research uses qualitative descriptive methods and analysis content, which are used to analyze and explore deep problems to find the answers. The result of this research is the finding of 58 scenes in the characterization, namely five scenes of characterization through appearance, seven scenes through dialogue, 13 scenes through other characters' reaction, 27 scenes through external action, three scenes through internal action, two scenes through leitmotif, and one scene through the name. Then, 21 conflict scenes explained how the conflict happened to the main character, namely two scenes of internal conflict between Cruella and herself. There are external conflicts, namely four scenes for Cruella and Catherine conflict, five scenes with Baroness, four scenes with Horace & Jasper, and six scenes with the society. That proves that the most influential conflict is with the Baroness and the society. The last one, nine scenes linked to the development of the Cruella's character. Any development of the character in Cruella is due to the conflict behind her. Thus, it can be concluded that conflict is a crucial trigger in character development since character tends to constantly develop when entering a story, especially if there is conflict. INDONESIA : Penelitian difokuskan untuk menganalisis perkembangan karakter dalam film Cruella (2021) yang disebabkan oleh konflik-konflik selama cerita berlangsung. Dalam karya sastra, perkembangan karakter menjadi hal yang penting, karena akan menyebabkan perkembangan terhadap cerita. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah; (1) untuk menemukan karakterisasi tokoh utama dan tokoh lainnya dalam film Cruella (2) untuk mengungkapkan konflik antara tokoh utama dan yang lainnya (3) untuk mengetahui dampak konflik terhadap perkembang karakter tokoh utama. Peneliti menggunakan teori Petrie & Boggs terkait karakterisasi, konflik, dan perkembangan karakter untuk meneliti beberapa permasalahan tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan konten analisis, yaitu digunakan untuk menganalisis dan mengeksplorasi masalah secara mendalam untuk menemukan jawabannya. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah ditemukannya 58 adegan dalam karakterisasi, yang mengungkapkan bagaimana karakterisasi dan peran setiap karakter dalam cerita ini, yaitu lima adegan untuk karakterisasi melalui penampilan, tujuh adegan melalui dialog, 13 adegan melalui reaksi karakter lain, 27 adegan melalui aksi eksternal, tiga melalui aksi internal, dua melalui leitmotif, serta 1 adegan melalui nama. Ditemukan pula 21 adegan untuk konflik yang menerangkan bagaimana konflik terjadi kepada tokoh utama, yaitu dua adegan untuk konflik internal antara Cruella dan Estella atau dengan dirinya sendiri. Lalu adapun konflik eksternal yaitu 4 adegan untuk konflik Cruella dan Catherine, lima adegan dengan Baroness, empat adegan dengan Horace & Jasper, dan enam adegan dengan masyarakat. Hal tersebut membuktikan bahwa konflik yang paling berpengaruh adalah dengan Baroness dan masyarakat. Terakhir adalah ditemukannya sembilan adegan terkait perkembangan karakter yang dialami oleh Cruella. Terbukti bahwa memang setiap perkembangan karakter yang terjadi dalam diri Cruella adalah disebabkan oleh konflik yang melatarbelakanginya. Sehingga, dapat disimpulkan bahwa konflik menjadi pemicu utama dalam perkembangan karakter, karena karakter cenderung akan selalu berkembang ketika memasuki cerita film, terlebih jika ada konflik yang dihadapinya.
